Superdelegates Remain in the Driver's Seat

Hillary Clinton had two major wins on Tuesday, and it certainly was enough to reinvigorate her campaign. She still trails Barack Obama in the delegate count 1460 to 1559, according to the 2008 Democratic Convention Watch site. The primaries are starting to dwindle down, so with little opportunity to close the gap at the polls it would seem that Barack Obama should be the voters choice for the Democratic nominee.

Not so fast though. Voters don't have all the power in the Democratic Party, remember? There are still 282 undeclared superdelegates sitting in the driver's seat of this nomination process.

In theory, these delegates could override the will of the voters by throwing enough support to Clinton to get the nomination. In my opinion, as I have said before, this is one of the most undemocratic scenarios imaginable.

If the voters choose Obama and the remaining superdelegates select Clinton, then the Democratic Party might as well hand over the election to John McCain and the Republicans.

If Obama is the peoples' candidate yet not the nominee, it will disenfranchise many in the party and cause some Democrats and lots of Independents to shift support to McCain.

Don't get me wrong - I want to see this competition continue to play out to the end of the primaries. I don't think that the Republican nomination being locked-up really matters; however, I do think that the ability for the superdelegates to override the actual outcome of citizens votes isn't right.

Here is a link to the remaining undeclared superdelegates. If one of them is an elected official or party leader in your state, please write to them and ask them to follow the will of the voters.

As I said in a previous post and again here, "The DNC needs to eliminate the superdelegate system and align itself once again, in both words and actions, with the will of the people."
